A speakeasy was an establishment
that was used for selling and drinking alcoholic beverages during the
period of United States history known as Prohibition (1920-1933, when
the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol was illegal. The
term comes from a patron's manner of ordering alcohol without raising
suspicion — a bartender would tell a patron to be quiet and "speak
easy". In the 60’s “Speakeasy” took on an entirely
different definition. When the local Indiana teens would visit Mother
Fuddpucker’s kitchen for burgers, shakes, and hours upon hours
of story telling. I would beg my Mom to “speakeasy” so my
buds and I could get out to “party” but Mom told such good
stories and served up eats to make the mouth water, that the guys would
want to hang around to hear more. A real cool Mom was Mother Fuddpucker!
But she never would “speakeasy”.
